August Monthly Report

By James Taylor |  September 1, 2009

“Our vision is to be a ministry of eternal significance that impacts the cause of Christ through the advancement and multiplication of His churches.”

August 2009 where did you go?

Simos’ Visit

We spent the end of July and the first week of August with our friends Greg and Alison Simo from Columbus, Indiana. They came to spend 10 days with us just to visit. It was a nice time to see them and get to hang out and share the amazing things that God allows us to see regularly. Not too many friends will fly half way around the world to see you but God has given us a few who will and the Simos have done it twice now!

Church Started

We have been working with Brother Daniel Mbuvi for about six months to get to this point of starting a church. He attended classes under Lynn Raburn about twenty years ago and has been here on the coast for about fifteen years. He has tried to start a church two different times without success. After much prayer and patience we have seen God work in Brother Mbuvi’s life to help him resolve and recognize some of the reasons why he has never been successful. On August 9 I baptized 36 people and we started the Mangangani Landmark Baptist Church. They called Brother Mbuvi to be their pastor.

Continue to pray for this young church and young pastor. Brother Mbuvi is twice my age but in ministry he is still young. The Lord has given him a heart to learn. Last visit I had with Brother Mbuvi I taught him how to baptize so they could have their first baptism service as a church. I am so grateful for how God is moving.

Jesus Film Mazeras

We showed the Jesus film in Mazeras this month. Last month when we tried I forgot the film so we had to watch another video, but that’s another story. What’s so exciting about the trip to Mazeras to show the Jesus film is that we had five people saved and we brought eleven people from the Malindi church and Mangangani church to do it! Did I mention we had five saved!! God continues to bless the work in Mazeras.

Juma is going to Mazeras every Sunday now and leading them in Bible study. Moses also went and preached for them one Sunday. We are working on a rotation to continue to disciple the believers in Mazeras. Pray for God’s leadership in this area.

Those we are teaching in Mazeras are all first generation believers and we are laying foundational teachings that we pray will give way to the Lord building a church there.

End of Internship

Silas Cross left us this month after spending three months here on the field. We appreciate his willingness to give up an entire summer to spend working alongside us. Our prayer is that God will use Silas’ experience here to help him as he follows the Lord wherever He would have him to serve.

Our church, Pauline MBC, is hopeful that Silas will be the first of many interns that will gain mission experience with us here in Kenya.  We look forward to sharing this journey and experience with others as God leads.

Ayugu Family Visit and Baptism

We had a dear friend and his family visit with us from Nairobi this month also. Julius Ayugu and his family came and spent a few days with us. Julius is a preacher in our work so while they were here he played guitar and preached for us in services. We also baptized his oldest daughter Susie. We had a sweet time of fellowship!

Singuaya: Gandini and Kwandezi

We visited William Karisa in Singuaya this month and found that there are two groups meeting on Sundays for Bible study. One is in Gandini at William’s home and the other is on the other side of the valley in Kwandezi. God used the tract distribution we did with our group last month to plant the seed for the group in Kwandezi to start meeting.

We visited with James Mungi one of the leaders of the Kwandezi group, to see what they were trying to do and who they were. While there we led him and his wife to the Lord! They want us to return to preach to the entire group that has started to meet. We left some literature, and we will be returning next month to see what God may be doing. We also met with the group at William’s place to greet them and encourage them to continue to study. Pray for both of these groups that God will give leadership.

Jesus Film Malindi

We also showed the Jesus film in Malindi this month. Our people did a great job in promoting the video and getting the word out but our attendance was very low. There are several things that played into this but we will try again in the next few months once school is back in session and Ramadan is over.

Family News

This was the month of birthdays for our family.  I celebrated my 30th birthday on the 2nd.  It was a nice relaxing day.  I took all of the kids to the pool after church and just sat by the pool and watched them play.  Our friends from Indiana were here so their kids came too.  They stayed at the house with James to relax a bit also.  When we got back, James had baked me a birthday cake with homemade icing.  I was very impressed.

On the 23rd we celebrated Lydia’s 5th birthday.  She was very excited to have a My Little Pony party.  Julius and his family were here, so Lydia had a few special friends here for her special day.  Their twins, James and Kenya (named after us) are just a month older than Lydia.  It was a special treat for them as well to have fun at the party.

On the 27th we celebrated Sarah’s 3rd birthday.  She chose a princess party.  We had her party in the evening after our Bible study at church.  She had three of her little friends from church come over.  She was super cute when she would get so excited that her friends were there and she was going to blow out her candles.  It was really fun to watch her.

We had another ladies meeting this month.  We just had a few, but it was still a great meeting.  We went through a gifts test to see what each lady’s talents and gifts were.  I really want the ladies to see how the Lord can use their talents and abilities in the church.  I am hoping that they will see the results from the tests and realize what they can do.  We are planning a special day this next month to just fellowship.  We are going to go to Mombassa and do some shopping at some of the local markets.  These ladies never have the opportunity to go to Mombassa, so it should be a really fun day.  We have been planning this for a couple of months now so that they could plan ahead financially.  I’m really excited about this day.  I think it will bring the ladies closer.

We started school in the middle of the month.  I’m so glad to get back into a routine, although the first few days were a little hectic.  Samuel was quite disruptive and trying to organize teaching 4 different grade levels was a little overwhelming at first.  But Sarah isn’t doing real school, just two preschool 3-year-old workbooks.  She really wants to be a part, so I’m trying to make her feel like she is doing school.  I want to take advantage of her eagerness now.  They have all been pretty excited to start school.  I hope the excitement lasts all year.

Thanks so much for reading and praying.
