Kenya Missions July Monthly Report

“Our vision is to be a ministry of eternal significance that impacts the cause of Christ through the advancement and multiplication of His churches.”

Pauline Mission Trip 2009

This month we were blessed to have a group from our sending church visit us for two weeks. It was a great time of ministry and fellowship. We certainly stayed busy the entire time they were here. When the group arrived they were “the group” but by the time they left they were our friends and a part our family. I love Mission Trips! We were able to experience so much together and make an impact on eternity along the way.

There were five members on the team that came representing various age groups and backgrounds.  God used each one in a special way to make an impact on our church here in Malindi and the other preaching points we are working in. We had four people saved during the trip and baptized four along with several other ministry opportunities and adventures. Through it all everyone was so cooperative and excited to be involved in the Lord’s work here. I want to extend a public thanks to our sending church and the Pauline Mission Trip Team 2009 for an awesome time in the Lord! May God bless each of you and the work you did in the lives of the Kenyan people you encountered!

Quotes from the Pauline Mission Team 2009

Paula Gathings

"I cannot get the people of Malindi and the villages out of my mind or off of my heart.  Praying for them (and hearing the reports) takes on so much more meaning now that I KNOW these people and the areas they live in.  God has so much in store for this area of His ministry because these are people who are hungry to know more about Him.  I'm telling everyone that this is the best vacation I have ever had."

Gwen Robinson

“I would have to say that... My trip to Kenya was very eye opening, the people are so hospitable and welcoming even though it seems they have so little. In Matthew 18: 1-4, the question is asked "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?"  and the answer was, the one that "humbles himself like this child".  Our confidence should be like that of a child who trusts his father; The Father, their confidence is like that, and I find that awesome!”

Ryan Copico

“I think I was affected most by the hunger for the Word of God by so many that we met. It didn't require a whole lot of "bells and whistles" or a big show to share God's Word, it was scripture straightforward and simple. I also quickly fell in love with the church members in Malindi and the villages we visited. It's clear that God is using James, Kenya, and the kids to develop relationships centered on reaching people for HIS kingdom. As a result of the trip, my wife and I have a burden for the Taylor's, their ministry in Kenya, and the dear friends we made.”

Rebecca Copico

"The trip was an experience that will never be forgotten, unique in every way.  It was like walking into the pages of National Geographic, I was wide-eyed and ready to learn all I could about the people and the culture but I walked away with much more...a true compassion for people who are, in reality, not much different from me.  Because of meeting my Kenyan brothers and sisters in Christ there is a part of me that will never be the same.  Their passion for God's Word is amazing and their sincerity in singing songs of worship is like nothing I've seen before.  I wouldn't be surprised if heaven is similar to that experience of singing inside the open air structure of First Landmark Baptist. I count this to be one of the most amazing experiences of my life.  I can't wait to see what else God allows me to do...I just hope it involves another visit to Kenya!"

Clayton Howell

“The trip overall was a great experience.  Although it was probably the most humbling and toughest mission trip I have been on I had a great time and learned a lot from the Taylor's and the people there.  I will most definitely be back.  Cant wait to run on the beach again James.  Thanks for everything.  I cant brag enough on the work you and your wife are allowing GOD to do with your lives.”

Missionary Intern Silas Cross

Greetings, time has flown by so fast. The summer and my time here is almost over. I have spent the last month just falling in love with the work and the people here. We have had a chance to see a big growth and maturity in the new believers, small fellowships that are meeting, and here in First Landmark Church in Malindi people are really starting to bear fruit. I’m learning more everyday about myself and what God’s true purpose is for our lives. Thank you. Silas Cross Summer intern, Pauline Missionary Baptist Church

FAMILY MATTERS

Even though things are slower pace here in Kenya, it still seems like time flies.  We had a nice little fourth of July complete with a few fire crackers for the kids.  I bought chicken to put on the grill and even found some sweet corn on the cob at the green grocer.  Then I began my search for some sparklers for the kids.  You can find fireworks at Christmas time and New Years but not during the month of July.  So I asked around at a few places hoping they might have some leftover.  Two different people sent me to the man at Malindi grocers because he had “connections.”  Unfortunately his “connections” didn’t have anything this time of year, plus I learned it was illegal to set off any kind of fireworks any time except for Diwali(Indian holiday in December) and New Years.  I explained that all I was hoping for were some sparklers for the kids.  I was assured that small firecrackers were okay.  The man’s wife just happened to have a few at her home leftover from her kids.  So she was so nice as to give them to me.  It wasn’t much but I was grateful for her kind gift.  And it was perfect for the kids.  I also found in the supermarket these very cool confetti “cannons.”  And I mean they were like cannons.  James held them and twisted the end as per the instructions and confetti shot out everywhere knocking James a couple steps backwards.  It was quite a site.

We had a wonderful time with the group from our church.  They brought tons of goodies for us.  But the fellowship was the sweetest gift they could have ever brought.  We so enjoyed getting to know each one.  And I think our kids enjoyed some new faces as well.   I know the girls especially enjoyed the special attention from Rebecca.  Miss Paula and I had a unique adventure in jail.  If you want to read about that you can go to our church website to find the details, it’s quite comical.  They were such a great group.   I was blessed by their  willingness to step out of their comfort zones and work side by side with us here in Kenya

The day after the group left our friends from Indiana came.  We were able to enjoy some down time with them doing a few tourist type activities which was nice after two non-stop weeks of ministry.  It was nice to see some familiar faces from home.  Josiah loved having their two boys here to play with.  They too brought us lots of goodies for which we are thankful.  Alison and I did a ladies meeting while they were here.  Since she is a nurse she did a basic how to stay healthy class for the ladies of our church.  I was very excited that we had 12 ladies attend.  Each lady received a bag with band-aids, antibiotics ointment, thermometer, toothbrush, toothpaste, a bar of soap, and both adult and children’s Tylenol.  They were very happy for their gift.

I just want to say a special thank-you to everyone at our church who sent all the wonderful food items as well as the much needed clothes for our children.  Also a special thanks to Miss Paula’s Sunday school class for the printer and cartridges.  You all are a wonderful sponsoring church and we appreciate all you do for our family.  We love you all.  Thanks for reading and praying.
